What is a bookkeeper?

Bookkeepers can provide a wealth of services required for businesses of all sizes. These include the following:

Recording Financial Transactions: Bookkeepers accurately record all financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, and payments, in the company's books or accounting software.

Managing Ledgers: They are responsible for maintaining the general ledger, which is a complete record of all financial transactions over the life of the organisation.

Reconciliation: Bookkeepers reconcile bank statements to internal accounts and help in checking for accuracy in reports, figures, and postings.

Handling Payroll: In some organisations, bookkeepers may process payroll, manage payroll taxes, and ensure compliance with relevant legal requirements.

Preparing Invoices: They generate invoices and keep track of accounts receivable, ensuring timely payments from clients or customers.

Managing Accounts Payable: Bookkeepers often manage accounts payable, keeping track of what the company owes to suppliers and other entities.

Financial Reporting: They may assist in the preparation of financial statements and reports, such as the balance sheet and income statement, for internal use or for external stakeholders like investors or financial institutions.

Budgeting and Forecasting: Some bookkeepers also assist in budget preparation and financial forecasting.

Compliance: They ensure that financial records are maintained in compliance with lawful and accepted procedures and policies.

Assisting with Tax Preparation: While bookkeepers are not typically tax professionals, they prepare and organise financial records which are crucial for tax preparation.

Sounds great. So, what is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

The terms "bookkeeper" and "accountant" are often used interchangeably, but they refer to two distinct professions within the financial industry. While both are essential for managing a business's finances, their roles, responsibilities, and costs differ significantly.

Whilst the roles of a bookkeeper are listed above, an accountant, on the other hand, takes the financial data compiled by a bookkeeper and uses it to generate financial models and reports. They are responsible for interpreting, classifying, analysing, and summarising financial data. Accountants often handle more complex tasks like tax preparation, financial forecasting, and providing strategic financial planning advice. They are also qualified to perform audits and can represent clients in front of tax authorities.

It has to be said, this woman has transformed my life. For the past 20 years I have bundled up bags of receipts and bits paper and posted them to my accountant. Finally finally finally I have accepted I must get with the times. My god I can’t believe I didn’t do it years ago! Hannah is a legend and also a right laugh. Loves a cuppa tea. Milk no sugar. Xx
